Almanac predicts biggest storms at end of January, and mid-February.
The Farmer’s Almanac has weighed in on what’s in store for us this winter. With temperatures near or above normal, it is predicting many snow and rain mixes.

It seems like it wasn't as cold this time last year as it is this year. I think we're in for a cold one, though I am not excited about the re-plastic-wrapping of my windows this will require. Has anyone else started winterizing their houses yet?

I'll leave it up to the almanac to give an informed opinion about how much snow might fall around Boston; however, I hope it's not extreme, because I would like to ride my bicycle as much as possible. Anyone have any tips for special gear to have for winter riding?

I'd recommend buying metal studded tires. Black ice always wins.

I think we got lucky with a long, and warm, Indian Summer. What's that saying about warm October means a cold February? Guess we'll all wait and see. Stock up on tea and cocoa! :-)

I can't remember it ever snowing before Halloween. I usually wait until Thanksgiving to put my snow tires on, but I just did it yesterday.

We got a really early snow last year. It was the beginning of October, but it didn't amount to anything. Just a dusting. Two years ago is snowed during the Head of the Charles. It came down heavy, but nothing stuck.

The Indian summer made up for the meh summer. We had one hot week this summer, then August got cool. I think the Almanac says the same thing every, near or above normal temps and snow. I can say that. I heard that early snow meant milder winter. Snow/rain mix is bad...that means 'followed by ice.' I'd rather have snow. I actually remember the snow we got in Oct. 1979.
For the record: I hate snow.

I think if it were a paper copy, we might refer to the old one, since they are published ahead of time, but the online version linked to in this article refers to the upcoming winter.
I heard once that one of the factors they use to determine the length of the winter is the relative thickness of fuzzy caterpillars in the season before that. It's factors like that that totally endear me to The Almanac.

When I moved back up here in 2007, I planned my move around what the almanac said. Sure as you know what, it snowed the day after I arrived ... Just sayin'!
