Fisher College Expands in the Back Bay

The private liberal arts school recently bought an Arlington Street building.

Neighborhood concerns are mounting over Fisher College's possible expansion plans in the Back Bay after the liberal arts college bought an Arlington Street building and sketches out plans to grow over the next decade.

"Things have shifted from how do we work this out, to how do we stop them,"Peter Sherin, a director at the Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay, told the Boston Herald. "And the next thing is how do we get them out."

Some neighborhoods are challenging Fisher's plans to use Beacon Street building for classrooms or dorms, and a Boston Redevelopment Authority task force is planning to meet March 28 to discuss the issue, the Herald reports

It's time for Fisher College to consider seriously following the Emerson model, maximizing their profit on their Back Bay properties and moving elsewhere. The first block of Beacon is not their "campus" as they like to refer to it; it's a residential block and should remain that way, We don't need or want more dormitories.

I have lived next door to Fisher College for more than 20 years. Most of the neighborhood is simply asking for Fisher to be a good neighbor, which, unfortuately they have not been. They have repeatedly demonstrated a lack of concern and follow-through on issues that would be important to ANY neighborhood including: double parking of large buses/delivery trucks for extended periods of time which causes serious traffic congestion including back-up on the Storrow Drive off-ramp, excessive noise from students outside partying in the middle of the night, particularly in the spring and fall, large groups of students smoking on the sidewalk (despite promises to create a smoking area in the Back Street alley) and rampant jaywalking across three lanes of busy traffic, which is just plain dangerous and a tragedy waiting to happen. An institution with this neighborhood track record should not receive City approval to double the number of students living in college dorms on one residential block of Beacon Street . Fisher's entire track record as an edudational institution must be thoroughly examined and reported before any decision is made to expand the college in Back Bay.
