Romney + Adultery Billboard: Funny? Inappropriate? Both?
Very social networking site uses Romney's image to knock his tax practices and encourage people to have affairs.
Mitt Romney is a cheater—at least on his taxes—according to online, extramarital personals website AshleyMadison.com.
The very social networking site posted that opinion on a billboard in South Boston this week, and the message lasted for less than a day.
The billboard featured an image of Gov. Romney putting his finger in front of his lips in the universal sign for "Shhh..." juxtaposed with the message: "if cheating on your taxes is ok, so is... AshleyMadison.com."
The ad ended with the company's tagline of "Life is short. Have an affair," and it ended its tenure along the roadside in less than 24 hours.
While Romney's tax practices have come under criticism for the use of Caribbean and Swiss bank accounts, there is no evidence the tactics aren't perfectly legal.
An AshleyMadison representative told Boston media that the billboard company pulled the ad because it had generated many complaints.
What about you? Would you complain about this ad? Is it funny? Offensive? Fair play? Tell us in the comments.

This is pretty funny, but I mean... what did they expect would happen? It definitely makes me question whether Romney has cheated on his taxes OR his marriage....

Excuse me, but you are the Editor of this drivel? [Editor Sara Jacobi sara.jacobi@patch.com] and you are commenting on this hateful garbage? This is unethical and you should be reprimanded. I can see what the Patch is now. Just another liberal mouthpiece.

Hi Dolores,
Considering we're not robots, we're allowed to have opinions. Having an opinion doesn't change what topics we cover in the least. I am sure there are lot of people who'd actually prefer to know the editor's opinions on a given topic.
Thanks for sharing yours!

Yes, and I'm one of the people who prefer to know the editors' opinions. Ms. Jacobi didn't put up the sign, she just reported it and asked what people thought of it. At most, she's guilty of trolling the Patch readership. BTW - I'm an Obama supporter and I don't care for the sign or that flavor of political messaging. It's boring.

This billboard ad is a blatant attempt to be inflammatory and solicit news stories (which you granted) ... and it honestly makes you question whether Romney has cheated on his marriage? No logic involved in that comment whatsoever. I'm not a Romney fan, but please try to think through things a little before you post given people associate your comments with The Patch and reporters in general.

I'm voting for Romney and I think this sign is funny. It should have never been taken down. Censorship at its finest. Too bad the sign is false, he didn't cheat on his taxes!! It's unfortunate people don't understand how dividends and capital gains are taxed. Question that should be asked is why are the revenues of corporations taxed, then shareholders taxed again on the dividends received?
What I find offensive is that huge Obama sign on the corner of Bunker Hill and Medford. Don't you need a permit to display such a huge sign?

...OOOh here we go, ya need a permit for that. You need permission to place a sign on your lawn, on your very own property that you pay taxes on! Soon with fops like you we'll need permits to wipe our asses. --That's it-- create laws, rules more business for those elected officials, jack asses in suits and those lawyers for every little matter in life, so when you don't like something you can fall back on the notion that the permit, the permissions-- the absolute censorship of the living of your very life can be subject to first having to pay for something, like a permit to piss and if you don't have it you'll have the Polize State involved to process you through the Prizon Industrial Complex so that you can become criminalized so your government can exact more fees from you like probation fees. Soon you'll need a permit to display your ignorance and feeble mindednes in allowing your very human and AmeriKan rights from being erroded right out from under you Joe.

Hey Masked - Funny stuff right there, and so true. The sign changed and appears to be smaller. Didn't even consider it being a Local lot. Still hate seeing it when I enter Charlestown, but as this loser Fleecing of AmeriKa failed to realize, it has nothing to do with the sign or an actual permit.

1:10 pm on Monday, September 17, 2012
Rick, I don't see how asking people what they think about a local controversy is at all like "undercover campaigning."
I thought the real issue here would be "freedom of speech/censorship" versus what is "factually accurate" since the billboard clearly implies false information, as I noted in my first comment. Does the advertiser have the right to say what she wants, or does she have a responsibility to present the truth?
Additionally, I will add "billboard critic running amok" to my list of most interesting personal attacks I've received so far in my career. So thanks!

Republicans have two "Idiots" campaigning against two sophisticated, hypocritical, Democratic "Political" prostitutes. Both support capitalism and imperialism. The Democrats began in 1828 to support and expand slavery; the Republicans in 1854 to support and expand capitalist mental and physical expansion of the most criminal system of domination and exploitation in world history.

Hey David, If there was a similar billboard controversy about Obama in Boston (maybe a hospital ad/birth certificate joke that was taken down?) we also would have reported on it. Everyone is biased. The question is whether or not you're aware of it. The more you disclose and acknowledge your bias, the better you can manage it. The fact that Ms. Jacobi is openly expressing a small aspect of her bias is healthy for the Patch. Now you can take it into consideration when you read other pieces by her, and hopefully it helps her maintains a professional eye on her work when she reports. There's nothing here to get pissed off about.
Also Ajax, what are you talking about? No non-right-leaning people complain about Fox news being biased, because a) there is no debate that the organization is biased (it would be like complaining that the Republican Party caters to conservatives) and b) non-right-leaning people do not watch that channel.

I'll have to take your word for it that you hear a lot of left-leaning people complain about Fox News' bias, Ajax. But I know a lot of left leaning people, because I'm one of them. In my circles, Fox News is as irrelevant as Rush Limbaugh or Ann Coulter. But so is MSNBC and CNN. I haven't seen a single thread of useful information come from any of these sources in years - complete waste of time.

Why do teabaggers hate captialism?
A capitalist company puts up a billboard to advertise its services, to generate some buzz, with the innuendo that Romney cheats on at least his taxes. A day later, it's mission accomplished - reporters and the public perked up. A capitalist news site does a piece on the billboard, noting the controversy and stating that there is no evidence of the truth of the innuendo. Result - teabaggers go nuts that anyone would imply that there is any criticism of a candidate they mostly just tolerate, and that the news site would even acknowledge the temporary existence of the billboard without frothing.
In a better country, Romney and his cronies would be in prison for bankrupting companies, stealing their assets and their employees' pensions. That some other companies profit from his reputation for sleaziness is just business. The billboard <b>is/was</b> funny.

Bankrupting companies? You obviously have no idea how private equity firms work. Here's a hint: Company is in financial trouble, they seek help from outside investors. Sometimes the inflow of capital helps, other times it doesn't. How is that illegal? You morons that think companies like Bain are bad are just too stupid to realize how they work. G'day

Capitalism always creates an impoverished category of citizens. It skews wealth from the majority towards a much smaller wealthier group that has control of the economic forces when a "hands off" government policy allows them to run amok with their greed. This is what happened from 2001-2008 and the wealth continued to transfer as the housing market collapsed and foreclosures proceeded. Obama has done very well compared with the history of the Great Depression. It took 12 years for employment to return to the 1930 level after 25 million lost their jobs under Herbert Hoover's Republican Administration. Obama stopped the economic free fall but it takes time to climb back up. An obstructionist Republican Party has put a stop to Obama's intervention and instead chooses to point its figure hoping that many Americans will forget that they are the ones that caused the recession in the first place with their policies. Now they've sold out to wealthy special interests and hope the American People will buy into their message of self-serving greed while our election system is unfairly skewed by money coming in from billionaires that stand to benefit at the expense of everyone else if the Republicans can successfully restart their actions to usurp the wealth of the middle class. This time they will destroy the "safety net" of government programs to accomplish the full circle of their agenda. Wake up America! You stand to lose big if you aren't rich.

Yes, Obama 2012. At least he tries to represent ALL the people. The differences in the 2012 election are stark and the most dangerous I've seen in my lifetime. "We The People" stand to lose a great deal if we make the wrong choice. The Iraq War has already cost us a refreshed, repaired and renewed national infrastructure. There is a need for serious flood control projects for several rivers and a need to cache fresh water to prevent flooding and provide irrigation for the nation's agriculture when the weather does not provide it. We badly need regional and national level public transportation with locally expanded walking and bicycling in towns and cities to both exercise our population and reduce our dependency on petroleum. Mitt is not a bad guy but the man that is there now is capable of doing a better job. Besides, the conflict in Afghanistan is still going on and there are several international issues getting attention from the current administration. It would be unwise to change boats in mid-stream while so much work is in progress.

The billboard, by the way, I thought was quite humorous as did several adults I know that also saw it. In no way did I think it was a slander against Mitt. There are those who take offense with bawdy humor but that is the way human beings are wired and I don't question the profound intellect that made us that way. Mitt probably laughed at it.
