TELL US: When Do You Turn On Your Heat?
With heating prices on the rise, when's a good time to turn on your heat? Before Columbus Day? After Halloween?
Brrr! If you're like me, you like to save money wherever you can and that includes heating costs.
This year, I'm doing my best to save on heating costs by wrapping up under nearly every blanket in the house. I'm hoping to not turn on the heat until well after Halloween this year, but it's getting chilly! Boston had its first frost advisory Friday night, meaning temperatures flirted with freezing.
What about you? When do you turn on the heat? Tell us in our comments section!

Last winter my wife and I did not turn our heat on once! This year we're going to hold out as long as we can, but expect to turn it on at some point since we have a new puppy.

That's amazing. Did you use those plastic window sealers or did you just bundle up inside? I used those sealers once and although it was a huge pain, it did make a difference on our heating bill. (But we also had old drafty windows in our apartment.)

We caved last night and turned the heat on to 64 degrees. I like to think we're tougher and more miserly than that, but oh well!

Right after Labor Day the Thermostat is turned on, the heating system tested and ready to go when the inside falls below 70.

I keep my place below 70 at all times, so the heat always goes on begrudgingly. If I'm cold I get another blanket or throw on a sweatshirt.

Oil prices have nothing to do with government, read your history and worry about the debt the Republicans and GW left us. They put us into 2 wars, tax cuts (mostly towards the well off) prescription drugs etc. these are cost the government does control but didn't and left us to pay the bill

Based on the spread sheet I have, I paid $4.62/gallon on 5/22/08 which was under Bush the younger. Next delivery? $2.35 on 12/16/08 under Obama. Nice try Tim.

12/16/08 is Bush not Obama. Not even a nice try. Also, summer heating oil prices are irrelevant, Nobody would order on May 22nd. You should check your spreadsheet for what is called a "Circular Reference".
The point is Mr Obama WANTS HIGHER PRICES.

Currently condo is comfortable, won't turn the heat on until internal temps drop below 68 degress.
Just a person!

My thermostat stays at 70 year round if it drops in the house below that the heat comes on, so it's no a question when I turn the heat on it is a question when it gets cold outside.

I caved, too, and turned it on ever so briefly over the past few days. But it's going off again as Monday will be a balmy 73 degrees.

Just put it on yesterday... the previous owners of our condo made it energy efficient and we dont have to use much heat to keep it a reasonable temperature for quite a while, its great. Last place we were in was impossible to keep warm. We heat to 65, but I might put it down to 64 which will still be comfortable.

We always shoot for November 1 or later- though last year we seemingly forgot to shut off the furnace :-( Only noticed yesterday when the house got to be a nice and toasty 68....

Still haven't turned it on. We got lots of insulation over the past few years and it helps to be sandwiched between the 1st and 3rd floor apts in my house.

I am not turning it on until it really gets colder, probably late November. I have, however, turned on a couple of space heaters to take the chill off when I am in my office or my living room reading. I usually keep my thermostat set @ 64, a comfortable temperature for me (No wonder why I am still single!).

When the parrot droppings begin to freeze before they hit the cottage floor, its time to turn up the thermostat. That said, I am very excited that the first floor of the house is getting insulated in November; and, hopefully, lower energy bills will follow, during Obama's second term.

First cold snap after Halloween. Everyone has a nice little oil-filled portable electric heater for their bedroom, too. Sweaters, jackets, and thick bathrobes for morning coffee keep us comfy if the other rooms are cool. I also open doors and windows on warm days like today to warm the house back up!

64 degrees 6-9 AM and 3-9PM and 60 other times. 68/70 on real cold days/nights. $1,000/year gas for 10 rooms. Would be double if oil. Good insulation/windows/door for garage under house.

Most of american's are Oil junkies, we've been conditioned to consume it like it was water (that's changing too). I wish it were 20. a gallon, we'd then start looking at alternatives - actually find renewable sources that are free - lovely windy day out today ... we're lucky we have more sun usually. In the last 100 years we have been on a chemical jag. 80k chemicals introduced to our daily life, plastics everywhere - including a giant vortex of plastic waste (it doesn't break down (petrolium base)) bigger than Texas in the South Pacific
on usage... try to turn on as late as possible it was 54 this weekend inside. I like it that temp at night (why heat up air when you are under a down blanket?) Otherwise, sweater, socks, insulation, programable thermastat and good windows or curtains, cellular shades- we were lucky last year, this year might not be so easy. Even if you can afford the cost. consider dropping a degree (you won't really feel it- you'll ease into something - it won't be "cold turkey" ....You can do it, just try.
