TELL US: Who Won the Senate Debate?

Share your thoughts on Monday's debate.

Sen. Scott Brown and Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren faced off in their second debate Monday night at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell.

Brown touted his bipartisan record and attacked Warren on claims of Native American ancestry and legal work for corporations, painting her as an out-of-touch opportunist.

Warren cited her advocacy for the working class and attacked Brown for his votes against jobs bills, casting him as a politician for the wealthy and corporate interests.

The Boston Herald has the complete video of the debate.

Both candidates got their share of applause from the audience. But we want to know what you think.

Who would you say won? Did either candidate sway you in either direction? Were your questions answered? Discuss in the comments below.

"Warren also pressed Brown to produce a list of his legal clients." And Brown said he has done so. Both Warren and the moderator said they had not heard this. And the Boston Globe reported this morning that he has NOT, in fact, produced a list of his clients, but only mentioned some of his clients at a press conference.
MY COMMENT: With this lie, does Brown fail this test of HIS character? Why no list? He should hold himself to the same "standards" to which he claims to hold Warren.

"..., Brown jumped in, apparently agitated, and said, 'Excuse me, I'm not a student in your classroom, please let me respond, OK?'"
MY COMMENT: 100% pre-rehearsed, he was just waiting for an opportunity to say this. He said something similar "‘I’m not in your courtroom. I’m not a defendant.” in a 2010 debate with Martha Coakley.

I personally liked when the moderator asked: "Does it trouble you that MA has never elected a female US Senator?" and Warren replied, "Right now, I'm trying to do something about that."

I was left with the overall impression that Scott Brown is mean and unpleasant.

Here's my message to my fellow MA voters: When we re-elect President Obama, we also need to elect a Senator who will work WITH him, not obstruct him.

For this reason -- and many others -- I will be voting for Elizabeth Warren in 2012.

Thanks for reading this.

I agree with your overall impression about Brown seeming mean spirited and unpleasant. I was also completely repulsed by his "I'm not a student..." comment. It is somewhat amusing to me that his "nice guy" persona has slipped so readily. It's also worth noting that he voted with the GOP leadership 30 of the first 32 votes; I don't believe it is credible that he is a "50/50" voter, as he claims.

Warren had to play defense most of the evening, starting with the moderator's initial focus on Warren's American Indian persona. It made it hard for her. Brown got the benefit of being able to frame the debate according to his plan -- which as a trained lawyer he had skillfully developed: start by casting doubt on her character and then hammering away at how bi-partisan he is. Of course his alleged bi-partisanship is his strategy to get elected in a predominately Democratic and Independent state, irrespective of the truth. Warren responded with details of Brown's straight-line Republican votes against important Obama initiatives, and did score with her comment about "oh, sure, Brown speaks this way in Massachusetts but in other states is all about being a good republican." But she needs to be more effective about highlighting how Brown is being deceptive and manipulative, and therefore untrustworth as a characer, by all this touting of bi-partisanship when actually is not. Brown effectively has Karl Rove on his campaign staff, and is carefully following the strategy of creating the truth you want people to believe by repeating deceptions louder and more often to avoid anyone successfully challenging you. Warren was not successful as she needs to be at highlighting how much Brown is a good Rove-style Republican

I agree David. There's a clear agenda by the Brown campaign to attack Warren's character, which I believe is one of her biggest strengths. Karl Rove's strategy to attack your opponents strengths - not their weaknesses - seems to be successfully deployed by the Brown campaign. It's disappointing. It's also disappointing that Warren isn't able to mount very effective counter-attacks given all the ammunition she has. She seems to be getting better at the game (it is her first go as a politician after all), so let's hope she clarifies her message well enough to get past the Brown campaign noise.

Brown ran all over her and his only blemish was the SC Justice question. Warren seemed timid. I find it funny people commented he was mean. He was sure of himself and respectful....more than he should have been. It was clear the interviewer heavily favored Warren...he was hard on Brown but he was undaunted. Its unbelievable to me that Warren wants to support what Brown perfectly labeled "Back door Amnesty". Its scary Warren is for putting illegal immigrants above US citizens in line for education.

I think the real Scott Brown was revealed when he immediately, without hesitation named Scalia as his favorite Justice. His efforts at damage control by listing others didn't work. He voted against Kagen. His true colors came out also with the snide remark about not being Warren's student.

Scott Brown ran his mouth off because he doesn't want to talk about his voting record--which is highly partisan & favors the millionaires. His blustering & bumbling manner was on prime time display last night. Scott Brown has a real problem with telling the truth!
I completely agree with the above statement from Robyn Ochs:

Boston Globe, great liberal source of lies! He actually did release them. You would know this if you dug deeper then the globe. Warren on the other hand, continues to Lie about her ancestry. She is so deep in the lie, she event believes it now. She has ZERO proof because it doesnt exist. Her proof was throwing her grandparents under the bus and said they told her. She has zero character. Only Brown proved last night he will stand up for the legal citizens that need him. He comes from a background of poverty unlike warren. How many lies can warren come up with . its crazy. she is embarrassing.

I didn't know Plum Island and Newburyport were poverty. I guess chilling on his millionaire dad's steamship, cruising around Cape Ann is your idea of poverty. Tell us more Einstein.

Scott is hardly the sleepy, suburban lawyer who did work for “small banks and mortgage companies” out of his Wrentham garage. What about Brown’s work as a title agent for a pair of major mortgage companies, Fidelity National and First American. It was back when the mortgage bubble was just about to burst and LPS, a company owned by Fidelity National, was exposed as one of the worst offenders of mortgage fraud. she should have asked Scott: Senator, when you were an agent of major mortgage companies, did you see the looming disaster on the horizon, or were you too busy eyeballing “the people’s seat?”

Hey Scott, I said he came from that background he obviously isnt there now. Didnt realize that needed a translation but now I see the caliber individual im dealing with. Its not admirable to come from poverty and stay there. He and his family worked their way up. And his dad has a "Steam" ship? I bet all the minions are below the deck feeding it coal. so, yes, lets tax more and regulate more. thats working out great in Europe.

You said he grew up in poverty, that's a lie: http://www.newburyportnews.com/local/x922854484/Browns-dad-proud-of-sons-political-rise

"As a youth, Scott Brown spent summers at his father's home on Plum Island, worked on his steamship, Sabino, and played basketball at the Elks Club on Low Street."

Really, really tough life. I mean, think about the sunburns and sand in your shoes.

Warren believes that having a networth of $14MM is not wealthy. Her words. Pretty certain her networth puts Senator Brown to shame, don't you think? I mean, really, really tough life she has.

Typical response. Refusing to see her true character. Paints a picture that she isn't one of "them", when in fact, she is. That IS the point. You were the one bringing up wealth, not me. Lie after lie? He works to pay his way through school, she says she's a minority. She has been caught lying since becoming a public figure. "I was the founder of the the Occupy Movement...No I wasn't." "I'm part Indian...I have no proof." "I'm not wealthy...She's worth $14MM" "I didn't use my 'heritage' to further my career...Harvard touted her being an American Indian."

...And I thought you were a bit more levelheaded. My mistake. G'day

Typical response. Your troll bro perpetrated the lie that he grew up in poverty. His whole family publicly denies all the lies in his book. None of his abuse claims were substantiated or reported. How does the son of a millionaire ex-politico gets beat up by a drunk step-father and there are no arrests? Everybody close to him has written him off as a pathological liar.

Several victims don't report abuse, men and women and children alike. I think there are plenty of cases in the news that back this fact up. Like you know what you would do as a child? You're a liar if you said yes to that question. Your argument is "he said, she said." I present facts, which you fail to counter, and resort going back to your weak stance based on hearsay.

You're refusal to acknowledge my facts goes to show you have blinders on and would vote for anyone that was a democrat. You're a lemming. Plain and simple. G'day simpleton.

Your response proves to all that you're wrong and I've shown the fraud that is Professor Warren. She's wealthy, so what? I could care less. Never the point, but you made it one. She shouldn't be claiming that she isn't though, and that was what I point out. And boom goes the dynamite!!

Call me crazy, but since we ALL gather our information about the candidates from the media, some (me) using more sources than others (you, specifically), wouldn't you say we're all guilty of reading "wordpress"? Or are you too narrow minded and foolish to see how stupid your point is?

Another comical point about your failure to defend your stance - I gather my information from a handful of sources, and you're critical of those sources I provide. Once again, you don't provide any. Should you provide any sources, we're supposed believe those are deemed reliable? You, my friend, need to stop pointing fingers and wake up to the fact that you're a narrow minded individual that will vote democrat even if a convicted child rapist was running for office. You're a lemming and nothing more. Go east, there's a cliff with your name on it. G'day

I watched the debate last night. The only thing I did learn from it was, If the liberals in this state had a dog up against a Republican they would still vote for the dog because he is a liberal. Get over the fact that Kennedy's seat is held by a Republican even if the Republican senator voted 100% with Obama the liberals would still want too vote him out. Scott Brown voted against his own Republican party because he felt it was best for our state. Not like other liberals from this state vote with the party or just don't show up to vote. Something is wrong when a billionaire tells us he should be paying more in taxes. Tell Mr Buffet with all the company's he owns to bring the work force back to the United States. Last week when the new iPhone 5 came out did you stop and think about how many jobs we don't have because big liberal companies like Buffet or Apple out source to China. You complain about the rich making money. Don't blame the Republicans blame yourself and the liberals. The next time you buy your Apple phone or a new pair of shoes stop and think where its made and all the workers in the United States with out a job, its because of the liberal company's sending job over seas for tax breaks, And because the taxes in this country are to high for them to operate. keep raising the taxes and more companies will move out and less jobs. Vote for Elizabeth Warren that's what your going to get.

Warren won the debate. Her answers were (generally) clear and concise. Brown seemed to talk a lot, but avoid saying anything substantive.

I like Brown, but his was a weak and petulant performance. Maybe debating just isn't his thing. Another outing like that and I may not vote for him.
