After President Obama’s selection of John Kerry as Secretary of State, there’s a lot of interest in the senior senator’s seat.
With U.S. Senator John Kerry as President Barack Obama’s pick for Secretary of State, it’s anyone’s guess who will run for the seat in a special election next summer. Kerry was nominated by Obama on Dec. 21.
If Kerry is appointed, Governor Deval Patrick will appoint an interim senator, who will be named to the position before the special election.
Names have already been dropped locally and from afar, including actor and Cambridge native Ben Affleck, who said he is not interested in running for the seat Kerry has held since 1985.
Earlier in December, U.S. Representative Edward Markey told reporters at Malden City Hall, he would “seriously consider” running for Kerry’s seat in the U.S. Senate. On Thursday, he made it official, announcing he would make a run for it. Markey is the first prominent candidate to officially announce his interest in Kerry’s seat.
The Boston Globe reported Thursday that both Democratic Congressmen Michael Capuano of Somerville and Stephen Lynch of South Boston have expressed interest in running, but neither have made any decisions or announcements yet.
There is also speculation that outgoing Senator Scott Brown will run on the Republican side.
Only time will tell who will be throwing their hat in the ring.

It's a done deal, so why thing about who else?! Markey is perfect. He's got the chops and he's down for it. Now it is a matter of who from his congressional district to replace him?

Capuano would be the best choice. I hope he enters the race. Markey is too old and worn out. Centerfold will run. He can't wait to return to his Royalty. Markey vs Centerfold....afraid Markey wouldn't cut it.

Brown won't run, He shot himself in the foot with his foolishness and negativity during the last election. He's gonna lick his wounds, re-check his pride and make a run for the Beacon Hill corner office, which also won't pan out. He showed his true colors and the public saw him for what he is. It is a done deal, it will be Markey. He is a workhorse and has plenty left to give. He knows the system inside and out. We need him there at this time. The goal is to get the best possible Dem candidate to replace him in the House. We need the strongest most experienced and credible representatives in DC for Mass at this time.

He doesn't see himself as others see him. He is so full of himself and confident in his ability to fool ordinary folks, he will certainly run. He had a shot at DC and he liked it. Once again he blew it yesterday when he tweeted that Obama had sent a proposal to Mitchell. He had to back down when he was told this wasn't the case.

Weld, Brown, Bielat. I thought Weld was the last good governor in Mass.,, and particularly miss it when he did away with the car registration fee and started taking down toll booths. Brown would bring his military experience (Colonel now, I believe), and state rep experience (same type of thing that Obama had at first), plus now Senatorial experience, Bielat would bring his Marine experience and his exceptional business/entrepreneurial experience (as well as his top b-school education) since when Romney lost, we lost a chance to put someone in there with some business smarts. I know, Bielat has never held a legislative office so why is he qualified to be a Senator? I had that same question about Obama, but he made it to Senator and then President. And let's face it, Mass should have a little bit of balance in its Congressional Delegation, since that will always work to benefit the commonwealth, having players on both sides.

He joined the Massachusetts Army National Guard when he was 19, receiving his basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey,[5] and attending ROTC at Northeastern University. He was trained in infantry, quartermaster, and airborne duties, and in 1994 he joined the Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG)] He has been active in the Guard for 30 years and has risen to the rank of colonel. He was the Army National Guard's head defense attorney in New England. He spent ten days to two weeks with the Guard in Kazakhstan and a week in Paraguay.
He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service in homeland security shortly after the September 11 attacks. He credits his military experience with causing him to focus on veteran's issues as well as issues of war and peace] He served on the Veterans and Federal Affairs Committee, the Hidden Wounds of War Commission, and the Governor's Task Force on Returning Veterans during his career as a legislator.
On May 2, 2011, Brown announced that he would soon go to Afghanistan for training as part of his Army National Guard service. When deployed in August 2011 for a week of training, he spent most of his time in Kabul.
On August 1, 2012, Brown was promoted to Colonel in a private ceremony presided over by his fellow senator, John McCain.
