As music students, we go through college wondering how we can take our talent and transform it into a career, looking up to those who graduate and skyrocket to success.
One of those people is Christian Scott, an Edison Prize-winning and Grammy-nominated trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. On November 17th, 8:00pm, at Café 939, you’ll be able to not only watch his jazz band perform but also hear how his group was able to become as successful as it is today.
Christian Scott, widely considered to be one of the leading jazz artists of his generation, will kick off The Checkout - Live at Berklee, a concert series in conjunction with famed New York jazz station WBGO and with NPR online. Bridging the gap between Boston and New York’s jazz scenes, The Checkout - Live at Berklee will be broadcast live in New York City on WBGO and worldwide on NPR.org/checkoutlive.
After graduating Berklee College of Music in 2006, where he completed two degrees in only two years, Scott signed with Concord Records and recorded his first album, Rewind That. After having been nominated for a Grammy Award, he released three more successful albums for Concord, including 2010’s Yesterday You Said Tomorrow, which was recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio.
During this afternoon clinic, Scott will talk about how he went from touring in his early teens with his uncle, Donald Harrison Jr.’s band to recording four albums that were critically acclaimed immediately after graduating from Berklee. The band will also discuss comping, dynamics, and group sound, as well as comparing and contrasting the different experiences the band had recording Yesterday You Said Tomorrow and their upcoming release for Concord Records.
For a Berklee student who constantly wonders how I can take my passion and turn it into a career, listening to someone talk about how he was able to leave Berklee and rapidly become an incredibly acknowledged jazz musician is really reassuring!
Another highlight of Scott’s appearance at Berklee is the live webcast. If you can’t make the clinic, Scott and his band will be on the Berklee campus to perform the d broadcast of The Checkout – Live at Berklee, which can be heard on November 17th at 8:00 on NPRmusic.org and checkoutjazz.org
