A couple of months ago, I stumbled across vocalist/guitarist Elena Tonra’s hauntingly beautiful voice on the popular music website We Are Hunted. Ever since, I have not been able to stop listening to her band Daughter. Lucky for me, and any of you other singer/songwriter fans out there, Daughter plays The Red Room @ Café 939 on Monday, October 15th with support from Choir of Young Believers.
Daughter is comprised of Elena Tonra, electric guitarist Igor Haefeli, and drummer Remi Aguila. The UK-based trio writes dark, ethereal songs that showcase their talents experimenting delicately with a rich array of songwriting ideas and intentions of pouring out their souls through their music. In August Daughter’s song “Landfill” was hand-picked by iTunes to be highlighted in its “Spotlight” section, featured as the "Free Download of The Week," resulting in over 150,000 downloads of the track.
Choir of Young Believers is the musical project of singer/songwriter and guitarist Jannis Noya Makrigiannis from Copenhagen, Denmark. The project was founded in 2006 as a solo project, and has now become a group relying on a rotating cast of musicians to flesh out their acoustic-based grandiose indie pop. The band has had multiple hits in its home country and was named “Best New Act” at the 2009 Danish Music Awards. Choir of Young Believers’ music combines folk melodies, orchestral instrumentation, and dark lyrics.
If you’re a sucker for the blatantly honest singer/songwriter thing like I am, you will definitely enjoy the music Daughter and Choir of Young Believers bring to Berklee’s Café 939 on Monday at 8:00p.m.
