Lets Take a Look at Your Running Form

OMBE Integrative Health Center
OMBE's blog from the Desk of Dr. Erik S. Vose…

With the running of the 2012 Boston Marathon just two months away runners are well into their marathon training programs.   As a result, many of these runners are finding themselves battling the aches and pains that all too often accompany long distance running. Many of the issues that I help people with are a result of repetitive motions that are performed with improper biomechanics.  The problem is that most runners don’t know what they look like when they run, and even if they do, they don’t really know what a low-impact running form should look like.  That’s where I come in.  I use my background in biomechanics combined with the latest research regarding running form to find areas to improve upon in a runner’s gait. The best way to do this is to go running with someone and watch them run! This is what a running form evaluation entails:

  • A run outside evaluating running form as well as creating solutions for imbalances or aspects of ones form that could use improvement.
  • HD video of a runners form will be taken to better visualize how to improve running form.
  • We can discuss how to prevent and deal with existing injuries and learn strategies on how to tell the difference between “normal” and “abnormal” aches and pains associated with running.
  • We can create “goal oriented” training programs to help you best prepare for upcoming runs.

I have worked with long distance and short distance runners and runners that prefer to use a barefoot technique as well as a traditional running shoe.  The fun part of doing a run eval is taking each individual’s starting point in mind and helping them to accomplish their goals by creating a comprehensive plan using small attainable goals.  The end result is a runner that has learned how to run injury free and to stay that way! Running form evaluations can be made by calling OMBE at (617) 447-2222 or by booking online. Happy running!
