Marsalis Berklee Jams at Cafe 939

Jamming is an enormous part of life at Berklee College of Music. When two Berklee students hang out, there will almost always be some jamming involved.

Sponsored by Marsalis Music, a program that brings together up-and-coming jazz stars and college students all over the country, The Marsalis Berklee Jams at Café 939 will combine jam sessions with a formal concert performance and classroom interaction.

The special guest for this unusual concert is the JD Allen Trio, a jazz trio known for connecting deliberate frameworks with artistic improvisation. Originally from Detroit, tenor saxophonist JD Allen studied primarily in New York and has gotten more and more attention since his 1996 debut jazz album. The show will feature a short set by leader JD Allen, bassist Gregg August, and former Berklee Presidential Scholar, drummer Kush Abadey, followed by a masterclass open to all Berklee students.

Marsalis Music was created in 2002 with a focus on jazz to establish positive interactions and relationships between dedicated music students and experienced musical groups or artists. They have worked with Berklee seven times in the past, combining the two contrasting talents coming from young Berklee students to professional jazz musicians.

The show will take place at The Red Room @ Cafe 939 on November 9 and 10 at 8:00 p.m. $2 for Berklee students and $10 for general admission. And as always, if you can’t make this unbelievable performance, the show will be streamed live on concertwindow.com.
