Alright, Jazz heads. Get ready for this Thursday, February 7 because Jaleel Shaw performs at Berklee College of Music’s Café 939 at 8:00pm!
As part of The Checkout – Live at Berklee series, alto and soprano saxophonist Jaleel Shaw will take the stage along with Lawrence Fields, Boris Kozlov, and Johnathan Blake. Shaw is currently a member of the Roy Haynes Quartet and the Mingus Big Band and has performed with a variety of different musicians ranging from Christian McBride to Roy Hargrove to Jason Moran.
Growing up immersed in the Philly jazz scene, Shaw has been playing alto saxophone since he was nine, and by the age of ten was already playing in the director of his jazz ensembles’ band. Upon graduating from high school, Shaw received a full-tuition scholarship to Berklee. While at the college, he received many awards for his talent and drive including the Billboard Endowed Scholarship, two Woodwind Department Chair Awards, the Outstanding Student Teacher Award, and the Boston Jazz Society Award. After Berklee, Shaw received a scholarship to attend the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where he received his master’s in jazz performance in May of 2002.
Shaw has received recognition from some of the top jazz music critics, including but not limited to reviews from Jazzwise, the New York Times, and All About Jazz which have all raved about his compositions and talent.
Thursday’s show is presented by Berklee in coalition with New York’s WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM and NPRmusic. Although there is nothing quite like seeing this guy play live, if you can’t make it out – the show will stream live worldwide at 8:00 p.m. EST on NPRmusic.org as well as on New York’s WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM.
