15 at Commonwealth School Named NationalMerit Commended Students

Fifteen seniors at Commonwealth—more than 40% of the class—have been named as Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Program. They are:

  • Akinbayo Akinwande of Newton Center
  • Taeer Bar-Yam of Newton
  • Matthew Costas of Wellesley
  • Céline Delaunay of Marshfield
  • John Deming of Boston
  • Allyson Edwards of Norfolk
  • Gabrielle Farrah of Winchester
  • Thomas MacDonald of Brighton
  • Laura Moraff of Lexington
  • Nathaniel Murphy of Medford
  • Jay Rauch of Watertown
  • Sally Rifkin of Bemont
  • Thornton Uhl of Marblehead
  • Gabriel Weinreb of Newton Highlands

Akinwande was also recognized by the National Achievement Scholarship Program, which recognized the academic achievements of outstanding African-American students.

Adding in the eight National Merit Semifinalists named earlier this fall, nearly 70% of the senior class has received National Merit recognition, a level of accomplishment in line with previous years.

Commonwealth School, located in Boston’s Back Bay, is an independent co-ed high school, enrolling approximately 150 students in grades 9 to 12. Founded by educator and philanthropist Charles Merrill, the school is noted for its academic distinction and robust art, music, and athletic programs, all supported by a close-knit school community. Its alumni include diplomat and author Peter Galbraith, musician Evan Dando, actress and filmmaker Kasi Lemmons, and geneticist David Altshuler.
