Library News -- Construction Update

Athens-Clarke County Library asks that you "please drive slowly and be extra careful."

Starting Tuesday, May 29, workers will begin work on the entrance and parking lot of the Athens-Clarke County Library as part of the library’s renovation and expansion.

“We will stay open during this part of construction, but we ask patrons to bear with us as the work in the parking lot and driveway will cause some temporary inconvenience,” said Librarian Kathryn Ames. “Please drive slowly and be extra careful.”

The Library’s driveway on Dudley Drive will be widened to create two lanes for the exit – one lane for cars turning left and one for cars turning right.

In addition, the parking lot will be updated to meet current codes for parking lots, which will include the installation of new islands, curbs and sidewalks, as well as the removal of some trees.

“The big tree in the circular island at the front of the building, which is a descendent of the famous Tree that Owns Itself, will remain untouched,” Ames said. “Unfortunately, we have to remove some of the other trees in the parking lot because they have outgrown the spaces they were planted in. New trees will be planted.”

This part of the project is expected to take about two weeks. During that time, the parking lot will have orange barrels, fencing and flagmen to help patrons navigate safely.

The library’s renovation and expansion project will add 20,000 square feet to the 63,000-square-foot building when complete, as well as completely update and rearrange the interior of the building. The $10 million project is funded by a state library construction grant and a 2005 SPLOST referendum. Work is targeted to be completed in January 2013.
