BMOP: Local BMOP/sound Record Label Kick-Starts 2013 w/ Two New CD Releases

The ever-intrepid Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) continues to enlighten listeners with more composer-centric album releases by its label BMOP/sound.

Known as the nation’s foremost label launched by an orchestra and devoted exclusively to new music recordings, BMOP/sound today announced the release of two new albums scheduled to drop January 8, 2013 – Paul Moravec: Northern Lights Electric featuring performances by David Krakauer and cellist Matt Haimovitz and Thomas Oboe Lee: Six Concertos featuring jazz-inflected collaborations with a plethora of today’s top soloists.

Paul Moravec: Northern Lights Electric features four compositions conjured up by the composer’s own personal, visceral experiences.  While walking in New Hampshire, Paul Moravec witnessed an astonishing display of the northern lights which inspired him to compose Northern Lights Electric. Clarinet Concerto was written during Moravec’s artist residency in Princeton, NJ, one of his childhood hometowns.  The idea for Sempre Diritto! was born while getting lost in the convolutions of Venice, Italy.  And, in the Catalonian region just north of Barcelona, the legendary mountain monastery dedicated to Pablo Casals moved him to create Montserrat.

In Thomas Oboe Lee: Six Concertos, the composer, Thomas Oboe Lee, shares his unbridled enthusiasm for virtuosic performer collaborations and their subsequent acts of friendship.  …bisbigliando… was written for harpist Ina Zdorovetchi, Flauta Carioca for flautist Bart Feller, Eurydice for cellist Andrés Diaz, Mozartiana for pianist Robert Levin, Persephone for oboist Max Hobart, and Violin Concerto for Irina Muresanu.  According to the Boston Globe, “Lee has a subtle ear for harmony, and his rich loamy beds of sonority are deeply satisfying. He gives important roles to percussion, colorful voicing to winds and brass while the strings sustain lush chords.”
