This annual event features students who were chosen from a large number of applicants and represent some of the best guitarists at Berklee. These guitarists and their bands will be performing a mix of originals and covers in the jazz and blues idioms. The concert is sponsored by Berklee’s Guitar Department and is directed by Associate Professor Curtis Shumate and fellow guitar faculty members Garrison Fewell and John Marasco.

Signature Music Series at Berklee: Alejandro Sanz Meets Berklee

This concert, showcasing Sanz's music as interpreted by Berklee students and faculty, will celebrate the presentation of his honorary degree from Berklee. Sanz himself will join the students to perform select tunes. Sanz’s new album, La Música No Se Toca, is one of 2013’s best-selling albums and has produced three consecutive No. 1 singles in Spain, Latin America, and the U.S. Sanz has won a total of three Grammy Awards and 16 Latin Grammy Awards, including three Latin Grammy Album of the Year Awards, a distinction no other artist can claim for that category. The concert is being presented by the Berklee Mediterranean Music Institute under the direction of renowned producer Javier Limón, Berklee artist in residence.

Jazz Revelation Records: Still Swingin'

Berklee's student-run label Jazz Revelation Records (JRR) celebrates the release of their CD, Still Swingin'.
The CD is a showcase for some of Berklee's top jazz players from around the world, with artists hailing from Turkey, Puerto Rico, Canada, Switzerland, Italy, Brazil, Japan, India, Israel, Greece, and the United States, each bringing a unique perspective to his or her compositions. "Our bands are young and incredibly vital, yet there is something ancient in the wisdom of their musings,” says Kevin McCluskey, faculty advisor and executive producer for Jazz Revelation Records. “They are both students and masters of their craft, and as such will always be on the cusp of the new, the exciting, and the authentic."

Joshua Redman Quartet

Saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists today. Featuring Redman on sax, Aaron Goldberg on piano, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums, the quartet will perform new, original songs composed by Redman specifically for this group of musicians, and pieces from Redman’s recently released recording, Walking Shadows.

The Jazz Journey of Gary Burton
Gary Burton in Conversation with Journalist Bob Blumenthal on His New Autobiography, and in Concert
Gary Burton, the ground-breaking jazz vibraphonist and seven-time Grammy Award-winner, returns to Berklee College of Music — where he studied, taught, and administrated for a collective 50 years — to celebrate the release of his autobiography, Learning to Listen: The Jazz Journey of Gary Burton. The program will feature Burton in conversation with jazz critic and Grammy Award winner for Best Album Notes Bob Blumenthal. He’ll also perform with his quintet. Copies of Burton’s autobiography will be given to each member of the audience.

The Berklee World Strings are devoted to the art of ensemble playing and the development of new music that features improvisation and the rhythmic capabilities of string instruments and players. Drawing from Celtic, bluegrass, jazz, rock, and classical styles, the ensemble presents original programs that include new compositions and arrangements from a wide variety of the world’s music. The group, directed by professor Eugene Friesen, features Berklee's finest string players from countries around the world and the U.S.

Fred Armisen

Fred Armisen is best known for his work as a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 2002 until 2013 and for his work as the co-creator and co-star of the IFC sketch comedy series Portlandia, which earned him an Emmy Award nomination in 2012 for Outstanding Writing in a Variety Series. This performance will showcase Armisen's many comedic and musical talents.

The Spinners / Tavares

The timeless appeal of the Spinners remains strong several decades after this soulful R&B powerhouse scored hits like “I’ll Be Around,” “Rubberband Man,” and “One of a Kind (Love Affair).” Over the years, the Spinners have acquired six Grammy nominations and have performed twice during the awards ceremony. They have also performed for presidents and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Tavares, another long-running R&B group that delivered a string of hits in the ‘70s (“Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel,” “That’s the Sound That Lonely Makes,” and others), will open. Tavares scored its first hit with “Check It Out” in 1973 and soon began appearing regularly on the R&B and pop charts. Tavares continues to bring an incredible energy to its performances.

Body Music in Boston: Closing Concert

From the tundra to the tropics, artists from around the globe will snap, clap, step, and sing artful music you can see and dance you can hear as Berklee and Wellesley College bring body music to Boston for a series of events culminating in this final concert. Artistic Director Keith Terry, pioneer of contemporary body music, offers a deeply visceral, cross-cultural conversation that only the world’s oldest instrument—the body—can reach.
The Wall Street Journal says the result is “like visiting an anatomical carnival, where hands, feet, fingers, bellies, rumps, and mouths engage in an endless musical ballet.” A question-and-answer session will follow the performance.
