Emancipated Century, Gem of the Ocean
Staged Reading - The opening play in August Wilson's century cycle. Gem of the Ocean is set in Pittsburgh's Hill District in 1904. Citizen Barlow, a recent arrival from Alabama, runs into trouble and takes refuge with Aunt Ester, a seer as old as slavery itself. When the play was produced on Broadway, which was Wilson's regular route after a stint in Boston at the Huntington, Phylicia Rashad played Aunt Ester. Here it is Cheryl Singleton. Cliff Odle directs.
