Sophie Calle has been called a detective and an artist-sleuth.
Many of her works are investigations into something that is missing, or
else they create an oblique portrait of someone or something that is
absent or undiscovered. She charts the unknown and the mysterious.

The Gardner 1990 theft is considered by many to be the worst art
heist of the twentieth century. Calle’s proposal to work at the museum
came at what was surely one of the most emotional and sensationalistic
moments in the institution’s 110-year history.
To create her project Last Seen . . . , Calle spent time
with the Museum staff and collection, in the process shifting the
paradigm of the theft from one of loss and sadness to one of creativity
and life. The infamous theft at the Gardner Museum became a trigger for
the making of what is considered today a seminal body of work by the
artist.
