WHY: Founded in 1873, MassArt has a legacy of leadership as the only independent public college of art and design in the country and the nation’s first art school to grant a degree. Events surrounding the 140th Anniversary campaign will showcase the enormous impact MassArt has had – and continues to have -- on the development of arts and design education in Boston and throughout the world.  Highlights of MassArt Faculty, Alumni, and Student achievements include:

Alumnus Albert Munsell launches the Munsell Color System (1905):  Munsell’s Color System soon becomes arguably the most effective system for organizing color ever invented. Users have included NASA, the U.S. Bureau of Standards, Microsoft, Apple, Hersey’s, and Toro, to name only a few.

Faculty member Cyrus Dallin’s Sculptures Become Boston icons (1913/1940):  Dallin’s equestrian sculpture Appeal to the Great Spirit is installed in front of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1913), and later, his Paul Revere statue is installed in Boston’s North End (1940), becoming two of Boston’s most beloved and recognizable pieces of public art.

Alumna Frances Euphemia Thompson begins a 47-year
career of training African-American teachers in rural Tennessee (1923):  Thompson brought art education to the underfunded
segregated black schools of rural Tennessee and spent her life teaching, creating art, and promoting art education.

Alumnus Al Petitto designs the first Kevlar helmet
for the  U.S. Armed Forces (1975):  Petitto’s design is the first new helmet since World War II.

Alumna Nancy Haigh wins an academy award for set
design for the movie Bugsy (1992).   Haigh has been nominated 5 times.
