The building was a source of major controversy when built in 1976 by Henry Cobb, of the firm now know as Pei Cobb Freed & Partners. The sleek modern architecture stood in stark contrast to the historic Trinity Church across the street. And during construction, the floor-to-ceiling glass panes were notorious for falling out and crashing to the ground 790 feet below. Eventually they were replaced with heat-treated windows that could better handle the thermal pressure as air moved between the inner and outer panes.
John Hancock Insurance was the original tenant of the building, but relocated to 601 Congress Street in 2004. The John Hancock Tower is located next to the Old John Hancock building, built in 1947, and known for its pyramid top with a weather beacon that changes colors based on sun, clouds, wind and rain.
