10 Yoga-Inspired Ideas to Help Kids Get Ready for School

You don't need to do yoga to use these concepts with kids to help them return to school stress-free!

Many people view yoga as a physical practice only, and while they know that there’s a philosophical side, many feel that they’re not “spiritual” so they can only relate to the physical aspect of the practice.    The fact is that many of the central principles of yoga are very basic, relatable thoughts and can be appreciated and utilized even if you never step foot on a yoga mat. Additionally, most of these concepts can be appreciated by both adults and children and can provide kids with an understanding of how the practice of mindfulness can help them scholastically as well as physically and emotionally. Here are a few you can share with children during this stressful and exciting time of a new school year: Feel better fast: take 10 deep …

What's Your One Request of the Returning College Kids?

Moving Day is upon us. If you could get the returning college students to change one thing about how they act and interact, what would it be?

That low, steady hum you hear in the distance is thousands of U-Haul and Ryder trucks descending on Boston. Saturday is Moving Day, when thousands of college kids return and move into their new apartments. It's also the day when many Boston residents hop a train out of town to avoid the chaotic swarms. The incomparable Universal Hub's yearly Storrow Drive pool may already be over, but moving trucks wedged under Storrow Drive underpasses is just one of the headaches the kids bring with them. If you had the chance to change one thing the college kids do in your neighborhood, what would it be? Would you rather they tone down the parties after 2 a.m., or stop using the space between parked cars as a personal lavatory? Or are we being too hard …

Fisher College Streamlines Student Move-In Day

The small private institution on Beacon Street in Back Bay has found a way to alleviate student - and neighborhood - concerns about the dreaded Sept. 1st move in day.

September 1st in Boston is as infamous a day as Marathon Monday, except for all the wrong reasons. On the day when 70,000 students head back to school, you've got frustrated students, parents and neighbors, double parked cars, deadlocked traffic, and moving boxes all competing for space on the city's roads and sidewalks.  Luckily for Back Bay residents, Fisher College on Beacon Street has found a way to streamline the move in process and alleviate neighborhood concerns.  Instead of the "every-man-for-himself" strategy that occurs at many of the other Boston campuses, at Fisher, the college actually hires 20-30 professional movers to help their 800+ students unload their parents cars and get their minifridges, microwaves and TV sets up the …

Options for School Lunch This Year

With less than a month before school starts, here is some information to get you prepared — including how to find out about your school menu.

Although many public schools don't have their school lunch menu pinned down just yet, it's not too early to anticipate what the cafeteria has in store this year. Boston Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services is using a national web service called SchoolMenu.com to let parents and caregivers know what's on the menu at their child's school. The site allows parents to choose a school and click on a date to see the offerings for breakfasts and lunches. It also includes some nutritional information about the meals, according to the Boston Public Schools website. Click here to register on the School Menu site.  Boston Public Schools write on their School Menu sites that they are planning to include more fruits and vegetables in their menu …

Are iPads and eReaders the Future of Education?

Schools throughout the Commonwealth are jumping on the digital education revolution.

Touchscreen tablets and iPads may replace the tired old textbooks in the classroom, as Ariel Shearer reported in the Boston Phoenix. Private and public schools all over Massachusetts began embracing the education revolution in 2010 when iPads first hit the market. Boston Public Schools purchased its first 200 iPads in 2011 with stimulus funding. Last year BPS received a grant from Verizon to expand the program. By summer break, more than 90 teachers had already received professional development training. In 2011, Burlington High School invested in iPads for its entire student body, eliminating the need for new textbooks and pushing towards getting rid of computer labs. Sacred Heart School in Kingston is integrating iPads into parochial …

Let's Hear Your Lunch Box Memories

Do you remember your favorite lunch box? Today's kids have as many options as ever but nothing will take the place of the Partridge Family or Scooby-Doo.

As our kids get set to head back to school in a few weeks, parents are on the hunt for their kid's next great lunch box. Lunch boxes have changed in design and shape over the years, but the basic idea is the same. Along with space inside for a cold drink, sandwich and snack, the cover is devoted to a favorite cartoon, character, TV show or movie. Back in the '70s, the lunch boxes were aluminum. In the '80s, they gave way to plastic. Vintage lunch boxes now are highly collectible. They are displayed as collections in people's homes, and sometimes they get their own art gallery shows. Do you remember a favorite lunch box? What was it? Have a picture handy? Share it with Back Bay Patch! "Like" us on Facebook | Follow us Twitter | Get "Patched…

Ten Things to do Before the Summer is Over

Don't let August fly by without doing some fun things to make the most of the end of this wonderful season.

As I write this, it’s the first of August, that wistful month sandwiched between the middle and end of the summer. The weather is warm, the days long and there is still plenty of time to have fun. If you’ve been spending your summer thus far stuck in the office, working nonstop, or if you’ve been managing other challenges in life that have gotten in the way of your summer, now is the time to commit to making the most of the next four weeks. Here in New England, we usually have nice weather through September but there is definitely a different tone to our days once the kids are back to school and Sept. 1 rolls around. We always say that the summer is short. So, do something to make the most of it before it’s too late. Have a wonderful …
