The free program for Boston kids aged 3 to 5 introduces kids to musical instruments, musical concepts and more.
KidsJam, the free interactive music education program for Boston's 3- to 5-year-olds from Berklee College of Music, is beginning registration for their spring classes. The program is intended to introduce young children to a variety of musical activities essential to a well-rounded music education. These include singing and sound exploration, moving, playing rhythm instruments, creating, listening, and responding to music, as well as learning about a variety of musical concepts and instruments. During this weekly workshop, Berklee music education students, led by professors Libby Allison and Charlene Ryan, practice their developing teaching skills in this fun and energetic setting. The following is a press release from Berklee College of Music: Berklee College of Music held a topping off ceremony for its new 16-story building at 160 Massachusetts Avenue Tuesday. The event included remarks from Berklee President Roger Brown, Peter Meade of the Boston Redevelopment Authority, and Berklee trustee Jeff Shames. The final beam, adorned with a traditional pine tree, was on the ground for signing all day before being raised and placed on top of the building. 160 Massachusetts Avenue is a mixed-use building that will include 370 beds of student housing, enabling the college to house all of its entering students for the first time. This year's festival celebrates women in jazz.
Known as Boston's biggest block party, the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival returns to the Back Bay and South End this weekend and could draw as many as 80,000 fans of jazz, Latin, blues, and soul. In its 12th year, the free block party takes place on Saturday from noon to 6:00 p.m. on Columbus Avenue between Massachusetts Avenue and Burke Street. Michael Bierylo, who has created soundtracks for Hasbro, Nickelodeon, and an Incredible Hulk roller coaster, has been named chair of Berklee College of Music's Electronic Production and Design Department (EPD). In his new role, he will embrace advances in video game design, software development, and computer music. He's been a faculty member since 1995 and member of the band Birdsonds of the Mesozoic since 1991. Berklee College of Music has named Steve Bailey, a ix-string fretless bass pioneer, educator, as the chair of the college's Bass Department. Bailey begins his tenure this summer. He succeeds Rich Appleman, who retired in May 2012 after holding the position for 40 years. "Berklee is iconic. With a world-class faculty and over 400 bass students, I can't think of another music institution on the same scale," Bailey said. "To have the opportunity to build upon Rich Appleman's incredible 40-year legacy is truly special." The 44th annual festival is the largest in the U.S. and will showcase more than 3,000 students and 200 bands from 13 states and Canada.
On Saturday Berklee College of Music's 44th High School Jazz Festival - the largest in the U.S. - will showcase over 3,000 students and 200 bands and vocal ensembles from 13 states and Ontario, Canada. They'll compete for $175,000 in scholarships to Berklee's Five-Week Summer Performance Program. The event is free and open to the public and takes place from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sat. March 10 at the Hynes Convention Center. Performances will include clinics and concerts by drummer Kendrick Scott, saxophonist Hailey Niswanger, and SF Jazz faculty members. Last night, Berklee College of Music awarded funk icon George Clinton an honorary doctor of music degree and celebrated his music with a performance from the college's P-Funk Ensemble. After the presentation, Clinton traded his doctoral robes for a silver suit to perform with student musicians on "Testify," "Give Up the Funk," and "One Nation Under a Groove," among other P-Funk hits. Clinton's longtime horn players Bennie Cowan and Greg Thomas, and many other members of his current band, joined him on stage for the career-spanning, sold-out show. The concert was the culmination of Clinton's four-day residency at Berklee this week.
