Berklee Alum Christian Scott Returns for School's Inaugural Jazz Concert Series

Trumpeter Christian Scott kicks off the college's inaugural Jazz Series this Thursday. Scott explains how Berklee showcases Boston’s jazz scene, and why his generation is the era of musical innovation.

At 28, Christian Scott has already risen as one of jazz’s most respected and grounded contemporary artists. The trumpeter, bandleader and composer earned two degrees in just two years at Berklee College of Music, has released six albums and was nominated for a Grammy. So it’s a seamless fit for Scott to stand as opener of the first in a series of Berklee Inaugural Jazz concerts, which stand as homecomings for several Berklee alumni. The shows, which are open to the public and will also be broadcast on NPR.org and through New York’s WBGO jazz radio station, reinforce Scott’s belief that jazz is a contemporary genre –  not just one to be looked at retrospectively as a form of past decades – and that Boston is the place to be to prove it. “…

Audrey Harrer and Nazli Green, who work for Berklee's online music educational curriculum PULSE Music Method, took five Boston bands, paired each with a member of the Berklee College of Music faculty, told them to compose an original song, then filmed their every move. It’s all for ‘Banded,’ the upcoming documentary which Harrer is producing and directing, set for completion in the fall of 2012. Clips from the film will be used for Pulse, which aims to educate underserviced children in music performance, production and technique. Songwriting is rarely a flawless process  and the five bands – Zili Misik, Aloud, the…
