Boston Police are warning residents about a varied phone extortion scam that involves victims being called and told that a loved one or family member is being held captive, or will be harmed, unless a ransom is paid. According to BPDnews.com, the police have taken several reports from residents who have been targets of the scam. In several cases the suspect(s) say they captured their victim after an alleged motor vehicle accident that resulted in property damage that he or she cannot pay for. Boston Police are investigating several suspicious letters sent to different Boston Public Schools today, according to a statement from police. The letters contained "threatening and disturbing" content, said police, but contained no dangerous subtances. Police said the letters were addressed to public schools in different areas of the city and were all postmarked from Texas. Police did not specify which schools received the letters. Male allegedly posing as having USO affiliation to solicit money from people.
Boston Police issued an alert Wednesday evening about a scammer in Back Bay who claimed to be representing the USO and soliciting donations. According to a post on BPDNews.com, officers on patrol in the area of Commonwealth Avenue and Exeter Street were informed by citizens of a suspicious male "who was falsely representing himself as a member of the USO." The male allegedly had "superimposed photos of himself and a false USO Identification Card" and had been "soliciting funds for personal use under the guise of donations to US troops." According to the police, a Rhode Island man pulled a syringe on someone after puling the fire alarm. Boston police responded to a report of a person chasing people with a syringe at 700 Boylston Street at about 2:51 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2013. On arrival, police located the suspect at the Boylston Street exit at the Boston Public Library. The victim told police the he saw the suspect pull the fire alarm in the Library. The suspect repeatedly pulled the fire alarm and the victim told him to stop. At this point, the suspect turned to the victim and pulled a syringe and said “they’re gonna kill you,” and started chasing the victim. A homeless man told police that he beat a man up at the Boston Public Library after he felt he was sexually assaulted. Boston Police Officers were patrolling the area near the Boston Marathon Bombing on Boylston Street at about 5:15 p.m. on May 11 when pedestrians told them about a fight in front of the Boston Public Library. Officers were on their way over to the Library when another witness told them “those two guys beat the other guy up.” Officers talked to the two men, who seemed highly intoxicated. Police were called in to break up a nasty fight in front of the Lenox hotel Tuesday morning. According to the police report, a pedestrian waved down an officer assigned to the marathon finish line area. The person and said there was a problem in front of the Lenox Hotel. When the officer headed over to the area, he saw two men fighting. According to the officer, one man was pushing the other against the front doors of the hotel and clawing at his face. The officer separated the two and tried to speak to the victim. All of a sudden, the other man lunged, grabbed the victim’s shirt and pushed him against the wall.
