Fashion Trend: Keep Going Back to Black

Black separates never fail to create a stellar look.

Victor zoomed by me on Newbury Street and I had to chase him down to take a closer look at his outfit.  He looked dapper and chic simultaneously, describing his style as "pop culture and high-end fashion references filtered down and re-created on a small budget."  Here he proves he is an expert at doing just that in his H&M hat, SEE glasses, DKNY jacket, Levi's Super Skinny jeans, and Hussein Chalayan for Puma shoes.

Fashion Trend: Dress Like a Parisian Student

Cute, playful, quirky clothing equals fun

How could I not stop to talk to Chalisee in her vibrant color-blocked black and yellow look-- plus her outfit even matched her shopping bag?! I was quick to realize from her accent and then from our conversation about fashion, that she is French and here on a language exchange. She named Italian magazine Grazia and French Elle as huge fashion inspirations. Here she wears a shirt from a boutique in Paris, shorts from H&M, and shoes from Marshalls.

Fashion Trend: The Summer Minidress

When I spotted aspiring model Jackie out and about in her adorable minidress on a recent balmy afternoon, I knew for certain summer is not yet over.  She appeared effortlessly 'summer chic' with her high messy bun, Millau dress from LF, and high-heeled "bootie" espadrilles from TJ Maxx.  She cites her best friend Nicolle Saylor, a Boston-based photographer and fashion blogger, as her go-to person for fashion ideas, suggestions, and inspiration.

Fashion Trend: Tonal Dressing

Tonal dressing: it's all about subtlety

I spotted Christopher and was thrilled to see a young man with such spot-on style in Boston.  He explained he was on his way to New York the very next morning to begin studying fashion merchandising at FIT-- this is no surprise considering his eye for line and color.  He names Rick Owens, YSL, and Proenza Schouler as favorites.  Here Christopher wears a sweater from The Finer Consigner in Newton, pants by Current/Elliott, boots from Barneys Co-op, and a Proenza Schouler bag.

Fashion Trend: Turn Tradition on its Ear

Borrow from the classics, then add your own touch

I spotted Justin while I was biking along Commonwealth Ave. and screeched to a halt to speak with him.  It's a bit rare when I find a Boston lad who dresses with such panache.  He describes his hip style as a "modern take on old-school Boston Brahmin."  Here he sports a borrowed hat, scarf found at an open market in Spain, Ralph Lauren jacket, Zara shirt, Acne shorts, Bobby from Boston belt, watch bought off of Gilt Groupe, shoes by Jack Purcell for Converse, and bag from Barneys.

Fashion Trend: Silk and Suede for Summer

Try pairing unexpected textures together.

I spotted aspiring fashion designer Tala on Newbury Street and stopped her to admire her white lace-up booties. She named “randomness” as her primary fashion m.o., as evidenced by her unexpected combination of elements.  Here she pairs leather shoes and a suede tank top from Saks, bag from Urban Outfitters, rope-like necklace from Banana Republic, and stunning silk shorts she found at Louis Boston.

Tall Trend: Platform Sandals and Shoulder Pads

Chloe shows us how to walk in heels and rock the 80's.

What a fantastic fashion coup it was for me when I ran into fashion blogger Chloe on Newbury Street in a perfect hip summer outfit.  I gushed about her 80s top from Beacon's Closet that she had masterfully paired with ripped Levi's denim shorts. She topped it off with fantastic platform sandals, neon fingernails, and a thrifted bag. Chloe, as many of today's hippest fashion girls also note, is deeply in love with the Victorian era. Not surprisingly, she also lists the 80s as a main go-to era when she's out shopping.

Bright Accessories Can Bring it Together

Hints of a bright hue against neutrals can make an outfit pop.

Lydia's red patent leather accessories caught my eye as she was leaving work on Newbury Street. She notes magazines such as Vogue, Marie Claire, and In Style as good places to glean a multitude of views on what is fashionable. Here she wears an Ann Taylor cardigan and sequined tank top, skirt from Forever 21, belt from Gap, and Enzo Angiolini pumps from Nordstrom.

Fashion Trend: Choose What Really Speaks to You

If it speaks to your heart, wear it.

When I spotted local model Ondi's bold necklace I stopped her to inquire about it-- she found it locally at the Allston shop Lola's Urban Vintage.  I then asked where she gets her fashion inspiration from, and she replied "I wear what appeals to me viscerally-- if my heart likes it, I wear it."  What better way to make fashion choices? Here Ondi also is wearing a top, jacket, and leggings all from H&M.

On Trend for Summer: Rompers

Local stylist models playful summer style.

When I spotted local stylist Christen, she was wearing a perfect example of cute and comfortable summer style.  She said she woke up that day wanting to wear her new romper and built her outfit around that piece-- a tactic she often employs when creating looks.  Here she is wearing a Topshop romper, Rubbish denim jacket, Aldo sandals, glasses bought off a street vendor, and a bag from the Etsy shop SabrinaTach.
