Over the past week, Republican candidates in the race for U.S. Senate met face to face for the first time to talk issues and make themselves known in the race for U.S. Senate, while their Democratic counterparts launched their first TV ads. State Rep. Dan Winslow of Norfolk, former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan and former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez took part in the first GOP debate last Tuesday night at Stonehill College in Easton. In the hour-long debate, the candidates discussed a wide-range of issues including: Roe vs. Wade, gun control, immigration, social security and issues affecting the economy. Two polls last week show double digit leads for U.S. Rep. Edward Markey over his Democratic opponent U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch in the race for U.S. Senate. Results of a UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll last week showed Markey (D-Malden) leads Lynch (D-South Boston) by 29.5 percentage points among potential Democratic primary voters. The poll also shows Markey is leading over all three Republican candidates. Fifty percent of those polled said they would vote for Markey, while 20.5 percent said Lynch, giving Markey a 29.5 percent lead. Twenty-three percent said they were unsure about how they plan to vote. Democratic congressmen Ed Markey and Stephen Lynch will face off in a primary on April 30 in the race to fill the Massachusetts Senate seat vacated by new Secretary of State John Kerry.

Stephen Lynch became the second candidate to officially enter the race to fill the Senate seat vacated by new Secretary of State John Kerry, following his fellow Democratic Congressman Ed Markey. With Tuesday's official confirmation of U.S. Senator John Kerry to the post of Secretary of State, the field is opening up with folks vying for Kerry's seat in his unexpired term in the U.S. Senate. But before that even happens an interim senator has to be named. On Wednesday, Governor Deval Patrick announced his former chief of staff William “Mo” Cowan will be the interim senator and will serve until a new senator is elected in the June 25 special election. Patch reported in December that Cowan, a Stoughton resident, would be stepping down this month and returning to the private sector. Another Massachusetts Congressman is seriously considering a run for Sen. John Kerry’s seat in a special election this year. Congressman Stephen Lynch is reportedly talking to “well-known political consultants” and planning a possible run in a Democratic primary, reported The Boston Herald. “I am giving serious consideration to a run for the United States Senate and am grateful for the support and encouragement I have received in recent days,” Lynch said in a statement to the Herald. In a radio interview Wednesday morning, U.S. Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) jabbed at Democratic Congressman Edward Markey about his residency in Malden, according to a Boston.com report. Brown questioned if Markey still lives in Massachusetts anymore and also told WTKK-FM he often sees members of the Bay State congressional delegation on planes trips home but said "I have never seen Ed on the airplane—ever," according to the report. The Washington Post is reporting that President Obama is considering appointing Massachusetts U.S. Sen. John Kerry as the Secretary of Defense. There was speculation Kerry would become the next Secretary of State. Either way Kerry's move to possibly become a member of Obama's cabinet will open up his current seat.
