The government is keeping tabs. Now, so can you.
Sure, he sees you when you're sleeping. But now it's your turn to keep tabs on the Man in Red. This season you can track Santa's flight in Google Earth, receive mobile phone updates on his whereabouts, and check in regularly for high speed-photo and video footage of his reindeer and sleigh as they deliver presents around the world. He's also on Facebook and Twitter. How, exactly? The Colorado-based North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is charged with keeping the United States and Canada safe from dangers originating from the sky or space. So it stands to reason they would use radar, satellites, Santa Cams and fighter jets to track Santa's flight path from the North Pole, across North America. According to their …

Should we say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays? Me, much a do about nothing!
There are certain guarantees in life: death, taxes and the annual and always 'controversial' what do we say to someone during the holidays, I mean Christmas or, man, never mind. Truth, I believe there are far more important issues to argue about than this and am indifferent as to how someone addresses me to acknowledge a season that has become far too commercialized anyway. However, sometimes like many others, I care, but not because of the actual topic, but because of the emotions people display when arguing this. Except, I guess something that does bother me, is the annoying fact I have to think about this when I say it to someone. For example, when bumping into a casual acquaintance who I enjoy a quick hello and the usual small talk …

Just let us know about a good deal in town in the comment section below and maybe you'll be this week's winner.
Each week until the end of the year, Patch is running a shopping tip contest. All you need to do is offer a shopping tip in the comment section below and we’ll pick a winner at random each week. Shopping tips can include sales or deals on anything: from supermarket bargains to sales on holiday gift items. And although we hope to find out about sales at local small businesses, large chain store deals are fine too. Each week, we’ll announce a new winner, as well as list all of the great deals that were submitted to help you with your shopping. For this week’s contest, all entries must be received by noon on Thursday, Dec. 15 (Eastern Time). This week’s prize: A $25 gift certificate to Exchange Street Bistro in Malden. Please note: This …

Some will have plenty under the tree, while others struggle for donations.
As the holiday season gathers pace, Back Bay Bostonians ask for donations to charities like Toys for Tots. Patch spoke with local store owners about the results of their toy drive donations so far. Donations will continue through the month of December at these locations:

Boston has three very different performances that are sure to please.
When it comes to dance in Boston, there is something for everyone, including three very different Nutcracker experiences. First there is the very traditional Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker, which has been a Boston institution for as long as I can remember, and you can see Jamaica Plain Boston ballet celebrity, Isaac Akiba, as “The Russian Lead” in many performances. Then many years back, Anthony Williams, brought us the very hip and youthful Urban Nutcracker (Wheelock Family Theatre) that put a contemporary twist with various dance styles (tap, hip hop, modern and ballet) to a traditional ballet. But if you are looking for some great comedy — vaudeville and burlesque — you should head over to the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square and check…

Tips you can use to help connect to the spirit of the season.
This time of year, things can go either way for many of us: we’re either excited for the holiday season or we feel a sense of dread. This depression can be related to financial troubles getting in the way of buying the gifts you want to share, to missing someone in your life who's died or from being single and not having someone special with whom to celebrate. At the same time, we all live in a wonderful neighborhood, surrounded by many people who we see on a regular basis, many of whom are our friends as well as our neighbors. It’s a great time of year to do something special for them and to bring a little joy into their life – especially because they won’t expect it. Tapping into a gratitude as well as showing support for those around …

Newbury Street League’s annual Holiday Stroll gave businesses a chance to connect with one another and offered great discounts to shoppers, all in the name of holiday spirit.
Caffeine ruled as coffee shops squeezed customers through the packed doors, and straight-faced shoppers urgently walked down the designer-lined Newbury Street Sunday morning. But by noon, the pace had slowed, the grins spotted the crowd like tree lights, and the 45-degree weather seemed just a bit warmer as the Newbury Street League's Holiday Stroll began. With deep discounts, in-store events, and live music and street performers, it was the perfect time to cross off gifts on your holiday shopping list, a great chance to make connections between businesses, and between the community – all in the name of holiday spirit and good will. “It’s a day where people are invited to come out and stroll along Newbury Street for the holidays, and shop …
The Boston Symphony Orchestra led the effort to break the Guinness Book of World Record for having the most carolers singing at once.
About 5,000 people particpated in the caroling at the Christian Science Plaza in Boston. The actual record is over 15,000 people, but the event was a blast!
