Anne Frank Sapling Dedicated on Boston Common

Tree will be located on the Mayor's Walk.

Dignitaries from Boston and Europe attended Tuesday's dedication on Boston Common of a sapling from a tree that once stood outside the Amsterdam home of Anne Frank during the Holocaust. Boston and 10 other communities were awarded saplings by The Anne Frank Center USA from the horse chestnut tree that stood outside the Secret Annex in Amsterdam where Frank and her family hid from the Nazis for two years. The tree toppled over in a 2010 wind storm, and 34 organizations submitted proposals to receive one of the saplings from the tree. According to the mayor's office, the planting is the culmination of a student project by 15-year-old Aliyah Finkel.   A sapling from the tree that once stood outside the home of Anne Frank in Amsterdam will be dedicated on Boston Common in a ceremony Tuesday morning. The ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the planting site on the Mayor’s Walk between the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial and the Earl of Sandwich Café. “It is an honor and a privilege to have this sapling from the same tree that gave Anne Frank so much peace and hope,” Boston Mayor Thomas M. A major piece of history connected to one of the most well-known figures from World War II and the Holocaust will soon have a home in the city of Boston. Mayor Thomas M. Menino's office announced Friday that a sapling descended from a horse chestnut tree which stood outside Anne Frank’s home in Amsterdam will be planted on Boston Common. Signs of Spring at Mayor's Coffee Hour

Menino was not present but city officials were there to answer questions.

Mayor Thomas Menino did not attend Tuesday's Boston Parks and Recreation Department Neighborhood Coffee Hour Series at Clarendon Street Play Lot in Back Bay, however several city officials were on hand to take questions from residents. City property chief Mike Galvin and city parks and recreation commissioner Toni Pollak were among the officials who appeared. Pollak said the city grows followers at their greenhouses at Franklin Park to hand out to residents at these events and Tuesday was no different. She said it started as a Mother's Day tradition and grew into a spring tradition. What Back Bay Streets Are Scheduled For Resurfacing?

Mayor Thomas Menino's office released the full list of proposed streets for repaving.

The office of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino released a list Monday of streets proposed for repaving during the 2013 road work season. The total plans involve resurfacing 45 miles of road as well as 1,400 pedestrian ramps. “Our residents deserve the best roads and sidewalks in their neighborhoods. Not only are clean and safe passages a matter of public safety, they also help support our small businesses,” Menino said in a statement. “We’re looking forward to our best year yet in getting our roadways and pedestrian ramps ready for another great summer in Boston.”  Proposed work for 2013 will exceed the amount of work conducted in 2012, which was the most "productive" construction season in the last decade according to Menino's office. Marriage Equality Anniversary Celebrated at Public Garden

Friday marks the 9th anniversary of the law that allowed gay and lesbian couples to marry in Massachusetts.

Dozens of local gay and lesbian couples gathered at the Boston Public Garden Thursday to celebrate the 9th anniversary of the law that gave them the right to marry in Massachusetts. The celebration, put on in partnership between Gay & Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD), the Respect for Marriage Coalition and Mayor Thomas Menino, ended with a group photo at a location popular for wedding photography. "It's been an extraordinary five years," said Ellen Wade of Newton, who along with her wife, Maureen Brodoff, were one of the plaintiffs in the landmark case they won in 2003 that led to the adoption of marriage equality in the state. Mayor Opens Temporary Office To Aid Boston Businesses Affected by Bombing

The City of Boston Business Assistance Center is located in the Boston Park Plaza Hotel and will be open until 6 p.m. Tuesday and on Wednesday and Thursday.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and his staff are reaching out to businesses in the Back Bay area affected by Monday’s bombing at the Boston Marathon to help them reopen as quickly as possible. To facilitate this effort, the city has opened a Business Assistance Center in the lobby of the Boston Park Plaza Hotel, 50 Park Plaza, “to respond to any business, employee or vendor inquiry,” according to a media advisory issued Tuesday afternoon by the mayor’s office. Mayor Menino 'Resting Comfortably' After Leg Surgery

The Boston mayor fractured his distal fibula after twisting his ankle on Friday.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is recovering after undergoing surgery on Saturday to repair a leg fracture. The injury occurred Friday while Menino was visiting a school in Dorchester. The mayor twisted his ankle and fractured his distal fibula—the smaller of two bones in his lower right leg, 7 News Boston reported. Menino underwent surgery Saturday morning at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The surgery involved the placement of a plate and screws to fix the broken bone, 7 News reported. The mayor sent out an update on his Twitter account on Monday at around noon, writing: “Thanks to all for well wishes. Surgery to repair fracture of distal fibula went well & without complication. Video: Menino Delivers Final Budget Proposal with Laughs

Menino says proposed $2.6 billion Fiscal Year '14 budget is "prudent."

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino presented his last fiscal year budget - of $2.6 billion - with laughs, joking about the mayoral race with candidates and potential candidates in the room. Menino Wants Cab Industry Investigated

Following a Boston Globe review of backhanded dealings in the local taxicab industry, the mayor ordered the industry be looked at.

With the local taxicab industry thrust into the spotlight by a major media outlet, Boston’s mayor ordered an oversight review. Mayor Thomas Menino wants to hire an expert on the industry to review Boston’s taxicab industry, according to the Boston Globe Tuesday. The Globe ran an investigative story on the industry, unearthing the fact that owners who routinely violate police regulations coerce cab drivers into paying bribes to get access to their cabs. “We have real problems, and I’m very concerned about it,’’ Menino told the Globe during an interview in his office. “We’re not going to tolerate this nonsense."  Menino said the review will include a look at the Boston Police Department’s oversight of the taxi industry, according to the …
