Capuano Won't Run for Senate

The Somerville Democrat won't seek to replace Sen. John Kerry should Kerry become secretary of state.

Rep. Michael Capuano (D-Somerville) will not run for Senate if Sen. John Kerry is confirmed as President Obama's secretary of state. According to Capuano's Facebook page, the congressman withdrew his name from the field of possible candidates. Here's what he posted: Thank you for all of your good wishes.  They have truly meant a great deal. After careful consideration, I have decided not to enter the race for US Senate. Capuano Votes For Fiscal Cliff Deal

The bill eases portions of the so-called "fiscal cliff."

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a deal late Tuesday to ease portions of the so-called "fiscal cliff," according to the Huffington Post. How did our local representatives in Congress vote? Rep. Michael Capuano, D-Somerville, supported the measure. The compromise was approved by the Senate at 2 a.m. Tuesday, and despite talk of rejecting it, the House ultimately passed the bill by a vote of 257 to 167. Sens. Scott Brown and John Kerry both supported the measure in the Senate. "Just voted for the fiscal cliff bill," Brown said on his Facebook Page at 1:55 a.m on New Year's Day. "Not the full answer but a small step forward. A lot of work next session. Good luck."

Would it be Scott Brown? Congressmen Markey or Capuano? Tell us who you think should run.

There was speculation Kerry would become the next Secretary of State.  Either way Kerry's move to possibly become a member of Obama's cabinet will open up his current seat. Should he be appointed, a special election would be held to finish out Kerry's term, which expires in 2014. Conversation from the breakfast table this morning to the morning commute has everyone talking - who will run for Kerry's U.S. Senate seat if he's appointed? Could it be Scott Brown? Or maybe Congressmen Ed Markey or Michael Capuano? Only time will tell, but we know you're talking about it. So tell us, who do you think …

Our governor would be a solid senator, but he is probably sick of politics after 8 yrs on Beacon Hill. My second choice would be Capuano, a proven leader.   more ›
