Suffolk County saw a 7 percent increase in home sales in February compared to a year ago as a low housing inventory across the commonwealth has created bidding wars.
Suffolk County home sales increased in February, going against the trend in Massachusetts which saw a drop in sales for the first time since December 2011, according to a recent report by The Warren Group, publisher of Banker & Tradesman. Suffolk County had 80 home sales in February, which was an increase from 75 home sales in February 2012, a nearly 7 percent increase. The median home sale price in Suffolk County went from $238,000 in February 2012 to $333,000 in February 2013 accounting for an 39.51 percent increase. Over the entire state, home sales dropped 5 percent in February compared to a year ago. "Two factors caused this modest drop in February: low inventory and a comparison with a strong previous year of sales," said Timothy M. …

The historic and grandiose Ames-Webster mansion sold last week after three years on the market. The 26,000-foot mansion – at 306 Dartmouth St., between Commonwealth Avenue and Marlborough Street – boasts 50 rooms, 28 fireplaces, a 60-foot-long great hall and parking for six cars. It had been serving as the offices of Raymond Property Co., and was put on the market in January 2010 for $23 million, according to the Boston Herald. Last week it was bought for $14.5 million by "FAL Boston LLC, an entity managed by Fahad Al-Athel, a Saudi sheikh and head of FAL Holdings, a conglomerate based in Riyadh," the Herald reported. The sprawling, five-building, one-acre Financial District "block" owned by the major investment firm could go for $100 million to $140 million.
A block-long area of property owned by Fidelity Investments is on the market. “The Block on Congress,” a five-building Financial District property, which once headquartered the major investment firm, is for sale, according to the Boston Herald. The block contains 344,000 square feet of rental space, the Herald reports, and could be priced at an estimated $100 million to $140 million. CBRE New England is selling the properties, which include four buildings at 82 Devonshire St./35 Congress St., 68 Devonshire St., 19 Congress St. and 15 Congress St.s, and a parcel of land at 54 Devonshire St., according to the Herald.
