Fashion Trend: Silk and Suede for Summer

Try pairing unexpected textures together.

I spotted aspiring fashion designer Tala on Newbury Street and stopped her to admire her white lace-up booties. She named “randomness” as her primary fashion m.o., as evidenced by her unexpected combination of elements.  Here she pairs leather shoes and a suede tank top from Saks, bag from Urban Outfitters, rope-like necklace from Banana Republic, and stunning silk shorts she found at Louis Boston.

College Girl Style

Not all students live in sweatpants.

I had to photograph Emerson College student Madi after I spotted her fabulous printed skirt.  She says she looks to fashion rebels like Gwen Stefani and Debbie Harry for fashion inspiration, "because they wear what they want and don't care what people think about them." Here Madi is wearing a Chloe bag, American Apparel shirt, jacket from Urban Outfitters, skirt from Anthropologie, Hue tights, and boots from Nordstrom.

Vintage Clothes Tell New Stories

Mixing high and low, old and new.

Vanessa, whom I spotted inside 344 eyeing a pair of black studded boots, says she's invariably drawn to clothing with "history," "character," and "personality."  This is evidenced by her side project, an Etsy vintage clothing boutique called ShopEND. Vanessa snagged her brightly-hued gloves at 344, her jacket is DKNY, her long shirt she's wearing as a dress she discovered at the local vintage shop Raspberry Beret, her bag is from Urban Outfitters, her tights are from  American Apparel, and her Etienne Aigner boots are also thrifted.

Playfully Punked Out in a Cropped Leather Coat

Leather forever.

I stopped Amy to ask her about her cute cropped leather jacket, which I thought looked perfect paired with her short plaid schoolgirl skirt.  Amy says her job at the Garment District in Cambridge inspires her fashion in two ways.  She looks to the varying and creative styles of her fellow retail employees and is also inspired by the clothing and accessories they sell there.  Amy’s scarf is from Walgreens, her jacket is from Urban Outfitters, her skirt is from H&M, her leggings are from Express, her YSL bag was a Garment District find, and her boots are from Bakers.

Mad for Plaid Equals Simple Fashion

Dress like you just don't care.

I found Steven out and about in the Back Bay and I liked the look of his nonchalant staple pieces.  It was clear he had picked quality and aesthetically-pleasing basics and reminded me of what James Dean might wear if he were young and alive today.  Not surprisingly Steven named Bette Davis as a fashion icon "because she never cared what others thought about her, ever."  Steven found his jeans at Gap, his coat at an an Army Navy Surplus store, his plaid shirt from Urban Outfitters, and his gray zippered boots at The Tannery.

One Eye Toward the Runway

High fashion looks on a modest budget

I spotted Yojanse peeking out from behind his stylish gray snood while on a break from his job as a hairstylist at Patrice Vinci Salon and had to stop and say hello.  He says he is often very inspired by the looks from Barneys catalogs as well as runway shows and  tries to recreate those looks using more affordable pieces from stores like Zara and H&M.  Yojanse got his snood and coat at Zara, his pants at Urban Outfitters, and his shoes at Guess.
