What's to stop someone from buying two 8-ounce cans of soda, getting around the ban on 16-oz cans? And what's next? Banning milkshakes because they are fattening? There have to be better ways to call attention to the obesity problem than government bans.

I'd like to mention another thing that makes Joseph Ness so special. When a bar/bat mitzvah student ascends the pulpit on his/her big day, he/she knows the cantor is in their corner! He always relaxes them and puts a big smile on their faces, never leaving their sides. They'll always remember him for that--and for his love of the Yankees!

I think we were totally fleeced at our recent visit to a West Hartford 24-hour vet hospital. We were told our 15-year-old cat had a blockage. He stayed in the hospital there for two days. One vet said he was a strong cat who could live for years; another vet said he had a lot wrong but sent us home with all kinds of meds. About $5,000 later, we took him home and he died within the week. I don't feel the $5,000 diagnostic tests and hospital stay costs were necessary.

I lived 45 minutes away, but Lord & Taylor in Bishop's Corner is where I found my bat mitzvah dress in 1970.
