Simon Submits Revised Plans For Back Bay Tower

New tower will be 52 stories instead of 47 stories, however BBJ reports height of the building will be no different than before.

Simon Property Group has submitted revised plans to the Boston Redevelopment Authority for a 52-story skyscraper in Back Bay that replaces a previous plan for a 47-story skyscraper in the same spot, according to a report this week in the Boston Business Journal.

Some of the differences in the new proposal include the replacement of most of the originally-proposed condos with apartments. The first four floors of the proposed 562-feet tall building would be retail, according to BBJ.

Simon would renovate the Nieman Marcus store in the Copley Place complex and add almost 800,000 square feet to the location, BBJ reported.

The Boston Zoning Commission previously approved the 47-story Simon plan back in 2011. However, the project faced a great deal of opposition from locals at the time.

BBJ reported Simon put the project plans on hold for seven months and a Simon official said the revised plans are for a more slender building to "minimize shadows."
